Unilever Indonesia Foundation

We engage the local society through our community involvement program and our brands’ social missions. Our community involvement programs are carried out under the umbrella of our Unilever Indonesia Foundation. These can be categorized into three main programs: Public Health Education Program, Environmental Program and Economic Development Program. On top of these programs, we also engage in various humanitarian aid activities.

All of our programs are formulated based on four guiding principles:

Relevance: Programs are aligned with our business sustainability.

Model: A pilot program is developed first before being replicated to other areas.

Partnership: Programs are implemented with the support of strategic partners that share the common vision.

Replicate: Successful activities and approaches are replicated into other areas.

How we engage the community through our program?

Think big

We start with big dream that we would like to achieve through our programs.

Start small

We follow up with a small step by developing a model implemented as a pilot project to test its viability. One model that we have developed was our Cadre Network model. The driving force of our model is our facilitators, and cadres are responsible to motivate the community to achieve the goal.

This Cadre Network model was proven to be very successful and has been applied in our Integrated Health Promotion Program and Green and Clean program.

In the implementation of our program we always work together with other stakeholders that share our vision. Vital support came from the local government and related government institutions. The media also plays a big role in our communication to the public.

Move fast

Once the model is proven to be applicable, we move very fast to replicate the model to other areas.

The largest part of our budget was allocated for program rather than for charity. This is because we believe that full involvement through planned projects will bring better values to the Company and the community engaged in the programs.

Through a global survey conducted in 2007 and 2008, we measured that more than 1.7 million people benefited from our programs in 2007. We managed to improve our performance, as more than 2.3 million people (a 30% increase) benefited from our programs in 2008.

1. Public Health Education Program

Integrated Health Promotion Programs

This program aims to educate public on the importance of having a healthy and clean life. It strengthens our existing programs in Yogyakarta and Surabaya and expanded to West Java. It successfully implemented the Global Hand washing Day in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Malang with a total of 14,000 participants.

HIV AIDS Prevention Program

This program aims to educate public about HIV AIDS prevention. 1,247 ambassadors at the school level and 40 ambassadors at the community level are developed. Targeting 10 senior high schools, 10 junior high schools and 40 local women groups (PKK), we estimate that 9,600 students and 1,200 people in Community Health Centres (Posyandu) benefited from the program.

The program launched the “Dare to Speak, Dare to Prove” campaign, including Jakarta-Bandung road shows in 6 high schools, ambassador competitions and a press conference that managed to attract 3,000 students.

In addition, together with the Indonesian Business Coalition on AIDS held the “Fun Bike, Fun Walk, Fight AIDS 2008” event. More than 1,000 Unilever employees and stakeholders joined the event.

Nutrition Program

This program aims to educate public the importance of providing good nutrition for children. We are working together with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), we have launched three major activities: a school feeding program and health and nutrition education, Walk the World and World Food Day.

Through Blue Band, we raised more than USD 100,000 for the UNWFP school-feeding program. We estimate that 16,500

people benefited from the program.

More than 1,000 Unilever employees, their families and our stakeholders participated in the “Walk the World 2008”. We managed to raise USD 100,000 from the campaign for the benefit of the UNWFP school feeding program.

In addition, The World Food Day event was held to raise awareness of community including our employees. The event was held in6 schools, which involved 1,000 students and more than 100 employees.

2. Sustainable Agriculture Program

This program aims to educate public in saving the environment. We deepened and widened our existing Green and Clean

programs in Surabaya and Jakarta and expanded our Green and Clean program to other big cities such as Yogyakarta,

Medan, Bandung, Banjarmasin, Balikpapan, Makassar, Manado, and Denpasar.

We have other programs of Litterbug and Trashion. These programs are developed in order to give education to public on waste management. We have developed 40 recycling entrepreneur centres with a total of 400 members in Surabaya, Jakarta, Yogyakarta. The sales of Trashion items vary from one recycling centre to another. One successful Trashion entrepreneur from Jakarta for example, is able to produce 20-30 items per month and received IDR 4-5 million per month.

In addition, we launch the Jakarta Green school and Jakarta Green Office competition in collaboration with Jakarta Green and Clean partners and WWF. The competition is participated by 25 participants ranging from government institutions, private companies, schools, hospitals and non-governmental organizations.

3. Partnership Sustainable Agriculture

Black Soybean Farmers Development Program
This program aims to improve the livelihood of black soybean’s farmers through assistances such as access to market and finance. It is a part of Unilever strategy to ensure the sustainability of supply of raw material.

The program launched in 2002 with 12 farmers and 5 hectares of land. In 2007 and 2008, the program managed more than 6,000 farmers in 7 regencies in Java, covering 1,170 hectares. The farmers were able to produce 0.7 to 2.7 tons of soybeans per hectare and contribute to 25% of total Unilever black soybean requirements. We have identified 8 local cooperatives and developed 3 new cooperatives to support the farmers in financing.  In addition, we have launched women empowerment and farmers competition programs to strengthen the bond between Unilever and the farmers.

Coconut Sugar Farmers Development Program
This program aims to develop 500 coconut sugar farmers in Lampung and Sukabumi. We have launched a coconut-replanting project in Pangandaran (12,500 coconut seeds).

4. Humanitarian Aid

On top of the planned programs, as part of our commitment to the wider community, we work closely with a number of civil society organizations such as Indonesia Peduli, Indonesia Philanthropy Association, Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT), media partners and retailers to respond to various humanitarian emergencies in Indonesia. Throughout 2007-2008, we provided 25,000 emergency relief packages for earthquake and flood victims in Bengkulu, Jakarta, Central and East Java and donated more than 800,000 Unilever products as part of our humanitarian aid activities.
