Balikpapan Commits to Develop Waste Bank System

Some areas in Balikpapan have potential local knowledge and superior products. These areas should also have been running the environmental management program.  For instance, they are running waste management system between organic and non-organic waste as well as reforestation.

This is a great potential of human resources and public areas qualities. Unilever Indonesia Foundation initiated to improve the areas by strengthening the waste bank program.

The waste bank program has been socialized at South Balikpapan Hall (17/09/2011). The session was attended by five Sub-District Heads, Head of Villages and several Balikpapan communities. More to that, Panti Suhartono also attended the session as the representative of the Balikpapan Environment Institution.

During the socialization, it described the stages and mechanism of independent and sustainable waste bank system. The existence of this program is expected to increase the waste reduction and empower communities in improving their economic welfare.

Panti explained, "I am so surprised with this program, I believe that the continuation of this environmental program is the fruit of Unilever’s concern towards the development of Balikpapan City.”

Balikpapan is one of the major cities in eastern Indonesia. The city has a great interest in environmental issues. The proof can be seen by the existence of the Green and Clean Program, in whicha partnership among Balikpapan Government, Unilever Indonesia Foundation and Kaltim Daily Newspaper.

Balikpapan Green and Clean Program is actually the continuation of the previous local environment program, Clean, Green and Healthy (CGH). CGH has been rolling since 2008. Moreover, the enthusiasm of the local community never disappears as long as it is for a better environment.
