Empowering Canal Community

In Makassar, there is a water channel that runs along 14 miles, and it is usually to be called canal. Since 1990, the canal has a function to balance the volume of water as well as the main base of flood control. As time goes by, canal functions and physic has been decreasing. Since 2007, many actions were taken, but no significant changes were made.

There are many positive responses and contribution from some parties who helped such as Indonesian National Army, citizens around there, and also foundation like Yayasan Peduli Negeri, but the problem was complicated and a change was hardly done. It is because the waste volume near the canal keeps increasing. The depth of the canal was 9 meter, and now is about 2-3 meter because of the waste.

Now, the function of the canal was changing into a waste disposal. The condition was extremely unhealthy, the water was black-paled colored and there are many insects and rodent as well. This condition worsened by witnessing people does their daily activity around the canal.

Until 2010, Yayasan Peduli Negeri continues to cooperate with the Makassar Government and Indonesian National Army. Now, there are community groups that have been running a clean program and socialization from Yayasan Peduli Negeri team motivation. In addition, there are cadres of the canal environment, amounted more than 500 people in five villages on the channel Sinrijala. This year, Yayasan Peduli Negeri has chosen again for socializing.

This year project has been scheduled to run until end of November, and it should bring all sides to get involved together.
